DEMAND FOR DORMITORIES

Second phase strike observed at JnU

JnU CORRESPONDENT

Students of Jagannath University (JnU) observed their second phase of strike on the campus yesterday demanding to build dormitories for them on vacated space of old Dhaka Central Jail. Earlier on Thursday they announced to lay siege the Prime Minister Office today for same demand.

Hundreds of students assembled on the campus at around 7:40am, and started their previously announced strike programme locking the important entrances of different buildings of the university.
Although main entrances of the university were open, however, none was allowed to enter any building to perform their duties.
Meanwhile, no classes and examinations were held on the campus during strike.  Earlier, they also brought out a procession from the campus amid rain that paraded different walkways of the Old Dhaka including Victoria Park.  The vehicular movement for more than two hours came to halt from Johnson Road to Sadarghat area due to the strike.  The additional police personnel were deployed on the campus to avoid any unwanted situation.
JnU Proctor Dr Noor Mohammad told that the teachers were never against taking classes and exams; rather it is the matter for the students whether they would take part in their academic activities or not. The second spell of strike and laying siege to PM’s office was announced on Thursday from a rally after they had observed their first spell of strike concerning the same issue.
The students had been demonstrating on the campus to take steps to build the residential halls for them on the jail’s land in the name of national four leaders since the beginning of this month.
