Expansion of education for development

Quality education should must be disseminated to the largest section of the people
Expansion of education
for development

That the government has attached its highest priority to expansion of education across the country to expedite the development process as spelt out by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Saturday is a welcome piece of information.
Education is one of the basic human rights as enshrined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Development of a country cannot be achieved without proper education of its citizens. Thousands of people are acquiring degrees in the country every year. But how many of them are   properly equipped to face the competitive job market? And in global perspective how much eligible they are? These are questions that agitate the public mind.
Higher percentage of pass in the SSC and HSC examinations and the increasing number of GPA holders are heartening but those are not the yardsticks for assessing the high standard of education. When the government has taken various measures for promoting education in the country, including female education, the school dropout problem is a matter of concern. Quality education eludes the children belonging to underprivileged classes. Many schools in rural areas lack infrastructural facilities and competent teachers, hampering education.
It is heartening to note that the country has achieved lower middle income group status. For achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) due emphasis should be laid to the education sector. People from urban areas as   well as from remote rural areas should enjoy the equal facility of education. There should not be any discrimination in matters of receiving quality education. The way IT sector is growing in the country, the persons versed in this sector will contribute immensely to the economic growth of the country.
Only by receiving the right kind of education a person can explore the job market and get established in professional life. In this way, h/she can improve their economic conditions and contribute to the overall development of the country.  The government has announced a number of incentives, including midday meal and some financial incentives, to lure students to come to schools. More such measures should be taken.
There should not be any compromise regarding quality education as it concerns country’s future development and economic prosperity and wellbeing. Teachers and guardians can play their vital roles in this regard.
