Gano Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday called for national unity to protect people’s constitutional rights and to overcome the national crises, including militancy and extra-judicial killings. Jatiya Party co-chairman GM Quader, Bikalapa Dhara member secretary Maj. (retd) Abdul Mannan, Nagorik Oikya adviser SM Akram, and former Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) vice president Sultan Mohammed Mansur Ahmad are already working on such a platform. “This will not be a political platform, but rather one for people to protect their rights,” Dr Kamal Hossain said at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday afternoon. Dr Hossain took the initiative a month-and-a-half ago after BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia called for national unity against extremism. As part of her initiative, the former premier held a meeting with Bangladesh Krishak Shramik Janata League president, Bangabir Kader Siddique Bir Uttam, on August 4. She is supposed to hold similar meetings with some other leaders, including Dr Hossain. The latter, however, said that the BNP has not contacted him yet. The eminent jurist said they would hold a citizens’ dialogue in Dhaka in November to discuss the unity process.
