Local giant Abahani Limited returned to the winning ways in the JB Bangladesh Premier League football after defeating Arambagh Krira Sangha by 2-0 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city yesterday.
After winning the match and 12 points from six outings, Abahani joined table toppers Muktijoddha, Rahmatganj, Sheikh Jamal in the same level.
Abahani, who are being rated as the most balanced and top seeded among the title contenders, have been struggling from the beginning of the league, could managed only two victories and three draws earlier and also suffering from scoring crisis, as they could score only five goals in their previous five matches.
The Sky Blues started well at the very beginning with a lucky gift from the Arambagh custodian’s howler as Sunday Chizoba scored the goal from his second attempt in the third minute after his penalty kick ricocheted from the keeper’s gloves (1-0).
But Arambagh, who have pleasing memories against Abahani, as well as bitter experience of the Federation Cup when they defeated Abahani in the group leg but conceded a solitary goal in the final, made a valiant effort to level the margin on 23rd minute but a Sajid’s sliding from inside the area went out kissing the side post.
Wahed Ahmed, who had rare opportunity to play as a substitute, has been considered in the starting lineup for last two matches, had good chance to double the lead for Abahani in the 26th minute but his casual effort find nowhere near the goal post.
However, the second half began with Abahani was leading 1-0 but could not play with full authority, as Arambagh went closer for more than once but the wasteful forwards could not mark the targets from the opportunities they created.
Abahani, who had to wait for 85 minutes for the second goal, doubled the advantage through Sunday when the Nigerian edged past Arambagh defender Issah Yussif to fire home their insurance goal past the goalkeeper to make it (2-0) for Abahani in the ongoing league.
