Woman killed in road crash
A 70-year-old woman was killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Purenda under Araihazar upazila of Naraynganj on Friday afternoon.
The victim was identified Alatulnessa of the area. Local sources said the elderly women suffered critical injuries as a covered van hit her at about 5pm while she was crossing the road. Locals rushed her to Madhabdi Prime Hospital in Narsingdi where she died in the evening.
Huge illegal Indian goods seized
A joint patrol team of Bangladesh Coast Gaurd (BCG) and Khulna Customs recovered huge quantity of illegal Indian Saris and long cloths from Shialgati Bridge area under Dumuria Police Station in Khulna early Friday.
Operation Officer of Rupsha Coast Gaurd Station Lt. M Fariduzzaman Khan said, on secret information, they conducted a drive in the area and recovered illegal Indian goods worth around Tk 50 lakh in abandoned condition. The illegal Indian goods have been handed over to Khulna Custom House. Aiming to combat smuggling in greater Khulna area, BCG strengthened patrolling and recovered the illegal goods, he added.
Man killed as tree falls on his bike
A motorcyclist was killed on the spot after a tree fell on his running motorbike at Munshirhat point on the Rangpur-Badarganj road under Sadar upazila here on Friday afternoon, police sources said.
The deceased was identified as Sajibur Rahman, 26, son of Shahidar Rahman of nearby Paschim Khoriarhat village under Sadar upazila in the district. The accident occurred when some people engaged by a person of the area were cutting the roadside tree that fell on the running motorcycle of Sajibur killing him on the spot. Being informed, police forces from Kotwali Thana rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it for conducting autopsy at Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue Friday afternoon. Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Thana ABM Zahidul Islam said that a case has been filed in this connection.
7,000 mothers receive allowance
Around 7,000 working pregnant and lactating mothers received allowance in three phases under “Working Lactating Mothers Assistance Fund Programme” during last six years till June 30 last and 2,500 others will get the allowance by June 2018 in the Rajshahi city.
“We will also bring 300 more mothers under the programme in Charghat upazila of the district by June 2017,” said Shahanaz Begum, District Women Affairs Officer, while talking to BSS here. She said the mothers along with their infants were given necessary antenatal and postnatal healthcare services for maintaining their sound health and to produce sufficient milk for their growing babies.
