Perching method gains popularity among farmers

BSS

PANCHAGARH: Primitive perching method is gaining popularity among farmers in this district in preventing pest attack on crop fields particularly during the T-Aman season, reports BSS. The farmers are applying the method innovated by the agri-scientists in the last decade and have been able to minimize the extra cost of insecticide. The farmers in the district have become accustomed to using the method as it gives a desired benefit in their efforts for saving paddy from pest attack.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said farmers have brought over 81,000 hectares of land under Aman paddy cultivation in five upazilas of the district in the current season.
Instead of using different types of pesticides to kill insects, the growers have adopted the perching method in a bid to get a desired output of the crop.
Agriculture officers have already started motivating the farmers to apply the method in their paddy fields.
The motivated farmers have erected bamboo poles with a particular distance in their paddy fields.
Noyan Prodan, a farmer of Boroshoshi village under Boda upazila, said birds perch on the poles and eat the harmful pests. Most of the farmers have learned how to protect their rice fields and save money by using the effective natural method, he added.
