Erosion by the river Kaliganga took a serious turn devouring about 50 dwelling houses at Barta village under Chandahar union parishad in Singair upazila of the district within a week. “The river devoured at least 50 houses in the village in a week. The families have already shifted their houses to safer places”, said Shawkat Hossain Badal, chairman of Chandahar Union Parishad.
Sources said the intensity of erosion is severe. Vast areas of arable land, trees and educational institution of the village went into the gorge of the river. Victim Abdul Aziz, of the village, said his dwelling house was washed away by the river eroding.
“I once helped many poor people. But now I have to seek for help from others”, he said. Hazera Begum, of the village, said she has built a house on 13 decimals of land taking loan from a non-government organisation. Now she becomes helpless by loosing homestead and belongings to river erosion. The river eroded thousands of houses and vast croplands in the last few years in the district. Local people said no steps have yet been taken to check river erosion and the homeless families did not get any help from the government or any other organisation.
They urged government to take necessary steps to check river erosion.  They also sought financial support for the survival. While visiting the erosion affected area of Chandahar union this correspondent found the erosion-hit people have taken shelter in the neighbouring village.
Some of the people of the areas have been passing their days in utter uncertainty as they have to stay under open sky.
Some of them were trying checking the river erosion by putting tree-branches and bamboo spars.
Chairman of Chandahar Union Parishad Shawkat Hossain Badal said he informed the matter to the executive engineer of Water Development Board. When contacted, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board in Manikganj, Hasan Mahmud, said he had sent a project profile to the higher authorities regarding the matter. “But we are yet to receive any positive response”, he said. He also urged the authorities concerned to allocate adequate funds immediately to resist the erosion and protect the wealth. In Faridpur, with the recession of flood water all three upazilas particularly Charbhadrasan upazaila situated on the river bank of the Padma, have come under the threat of serious erosion, reports BSS.
According to official sources, Charbahdrasan upazila is the worst hit area as the erosion has already devoured about 100 acres of crop land, 120 meters of flood control embankment and the main road connecting the upazaila with the district headquarters even has come under the threat of erosion.
Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury Nixon MP of Faridpur- 4 constituency along with the upazila officials visited the erosion hit area on Wednesday and instructed the WDB officials to take immediate protective measures.
The WDB has decided to drop sand bags in the erosion-hit area from yesterday.
It was officially learnt that the age old MP Dangi government primary school, MP Dangi mosque and some other institutions have come under the threat of erosion.
