Terming inhuman the jailing of her party’s ailing leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday demanded his immediate release, reports UNB. In a statement, she said, “Rizvi has sought bail from court as he himself is a lawyer and respectful of law. I think justice is not reflected on the rejection of his bail prayer by the court.” The BNP chief alleged that though Rizvi’s name was not there in the FIR of the case, police implicated him in it later out of politicalvengeance. “The jailing of sick Rizvi in bailable cases has reflected the motivation of the ruling party.” Earlier in the day, a court here sent BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi to jail rejecting his bail pleas in five cases of violence.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Quamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order when the BNP leader surrendered before his court and prayed for bail. Khaleda alleged that the government has turned the entire country into a jail by implicating opposition leaders and activists in ‘false’ cases using the state machinery. “All the basic pillars of the state are now on the verge of destruction due to politicization…even the judiciary now can’t function independently,” she observed.
