Girls ahead in pass rate

The number of Gross Point Average (GPA)-5 holders in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams has increased by 1.4 per cent this year, compared to the previous year. This year, the average pass rate under 10 education boards is 74.70 per cent, 5.10 per cent increase from last year. This is the first time all boards have published marks along with GPA standings. The girl students are ahead of the boys in pass percentage by 1.67, but they are behind in obtaining GPA-5. The pass rate of the girls is 75.60 per cent, and for the boys it is 73.93. In all, 32,381 boys have obtained GPA-5, while for girls the number is 25,865. This year, 58,276 have got GPA-5, and 41,468 (85 per cent) of them are from the science and home economics group. The Dhaka Board has got the highest GPA-5, numbering 28,110 but it is in the fifth position in pass percentage (73.53 per cent). In GPA-5, Dhaka is followed by the Technical Board 6,587, Rajshahi Board 6,073,  Jessore Board 4,586, Dinajpur Board 3,899, Chittagong Board 2,253, Comilla Board 1,912, Sylhet Board 1,330, Madarsa Board 2,414 and the Barisal Board 787. Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid announced the results at a press conference at the Secretariat yesterday.  
A total of 8,99,150 students under 10 education boards have passed this year, an increase of 1,60,278. Besides, the number of GPA-5 holders has increased by 15,382. Educational institutions that recorded 100 per cent pass number 848 this year, while it was 1,133 last year. The number of zero pass educational institutions is 25, down from last year’s 35. Under the eight general education boards, the total pass percentage is 72.47, an increase of 6.63 per cent. The number of GPA-5 holders is 48,950, an increase of 14,229.
Under the eight education boards, in the Science and Home Economics groups the number is 41,468, while in Humanities/Islamic Studies/Music it is 2,751 and in Business Studies 4,731.
Regarding the pass percentage under the 10 education boards, the Madrasa Board tops the list with 88.19 per cent, and the Technical Board has 84.57.
 The Jessore Board made a big leap in pass percentage this year—83.42 per cent. It was 46.45 last year.
This year, the pass rate of the Rajshahi Board is 75.40 per cent, Dhaka Board 73.53 per cent, Barisal 70.13 per cent, Sylhet 68.59 per cent, Chittagong 64.60 and Comilla 64.49 per cent.
Under the Madrasa Board, 79,020 students have passed, an increase of 4,559, while the GPA-5 holders were 2,414, up by 979.
Under the Technical Board, 86,469 students have passed, an increase of 2,344, while GPA-5 holders number 6,587, an increase of 157.
In the seven overseas educational institutions, 232 students out of 248 have passed, while 53 have got GPA-5.
The minister said the results are positive and they were made possible by various steps and cooperation of teachers, students and guardians.
Replying to a query, he said: “The number of GPA-5 holders under the Dhaka Board is more because most of the students here study in good educational institutions.” Asked about the sudden change in the Jessore Board results, the chairman of the board, Prof. Md. Abdul Mazid, said: “There was no pressure to increase the number of students. We took the matter seriously and initiated various measures in this regard.” Earlier, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, along with chairmen of all the education boards, handed over copies of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban at 10am. Students will be able to apply for re-evaluation of their results, if needed, between August 19 and 25. They will have to send an SMS only from Teletalk numbers to 16222 with text “RSC” followed by space, then first three letters of the respective education board, another space, roll number followed by space again and then the subject code. If there are several subjects, one will have to write the codes giving commas after each subject code in the same SMS. The sender will then get a PIN number. The amount of the fee that will have to be paid will also be mentioned in the reply to the text message. If the terms are accepted, the student will then have to send another SMS to the same number with text “RSC” followed by a space then “YES”, another space, a mobile phone number to contact. An amount of Tk. 150 will be charged for re-evaluation of each subject.
