Awami League (AL) joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday reiterated his demand for a probe into the “conspiracy” that had set the stage for the brutal killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“Those who had hatched the conspiracy from behind the scenes to assassinate Bangabandhu should be brought to justice through an impartial probe,” he said, while speaking at a discussion hosted by the Shadhinata Shikhok Parishad marking the 41st anniversary of the assassination of the Father of the Nation.
He said Bangabandhu’s killers had already been tried and the verdicts executed, but those who had set the stage should be brought to book by forming a commission of inquiry.
He also claimed the late founder of the BNP, Ziaur Rahman, had played a key role in the conspiracy.
“The nation wants to know who had set the ground for the killing,” he said.
He also demanded a posthumous trial of Ziaur Rahman, a former president.
The AL leader said the root of militancy in the country goes back to Bangabandhu’s killing. “If we want to root out militancy from the country, we will have to remove the BNP-Jamaat elements,” he said.
Meanwhile, food minister Quamrul Islam said the leaders and activists of the BNP-Jamaat combine were trying to reduce the country to a failed state by resorting to terrorism and militancy.
He was speaking at a discussion in Savar organised by the local Awami League as part of its National Mourning Day programme and the 41st anniversary of the killing of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He said at a time when the country was striding towards development and prosperity under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, the BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists were trying to hinder progress by launching attacks at different places.
He said strong action would be taken against the BNP-Jamaat men if they tried to create anarchic conditions in the country.
