Men held over killing wife, son
Comilla: Police arrested a man yesterday from Langadu upazila of Rangamati in a case for killing his wife and minor son in Comilla on Sunday, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Nazmul Hasan, a resident of Karkoit Simantapur village in Chandina upazila of Comilla.
Mohammad Salauddin, inspector (Investigation) of Kotwali Police Station, said tipped-off, a team of police led by him conducted a drive in the area and arrested Nazmul at about 11:30am. Nazmul, a guard of the medicine company ‘Mim Pax Agro Complex’, confessed that he was directly involved in the killing, Salauddin added.
Nasima Akhter, wife of Nazmul Hossain, and their son Nafis, aged one and a half years, were found dead in a septic tank in the Comilla’s Housing Estate Area on Sunday.
2 girls die from snakebites

Two schoolgirls died from snakebites in separate incidents in Manirampur upazila of Jessore district early yesterday.
Local people said a venomous snake bit Muslima Khatun, 12, a class VII student of Sundalpur Mohila Dakhil Madrasa and daughter of Abdullah, a resident of Ratondia village of the upazila, at about 2:00am while she was asleep in her room, leaving her injured.
Muslima was rushed to Manirampur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead.
In another incident, Piya Khatun, 16, a class X student of Helanchi High School and daughter of Sirajul Islam, a resident of Helanchi village of the upazila, received injuries when a snake bit her at about 1:00am. She succumbed to her injures on way to a local hospital.
Missing student found dead
Benapole: A madrasah student was found dead at Jagadishpur in Chowgachha upazila of Jessore on Tuesday night seven days after his going missing, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Maruf Hossain, 12, a class VII student at a local dakhil madrasah and son of Tota Miah, a resident of Shwarparajpur village.
Local people noticed Maruf’s body lying in the area around 10:30pm and informed police. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Being informed, Maruf’s family members identified the body to be his. Officer-in-Charge of Chowgachha Police Station Masiur Rahman said Maruf had gone missing seven days back. A case was filed in this connection.
Drugs seized from Hili frontier
RANGPUR: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized over 3.26 lakh pieces of smuggled tablets worth Tk 65.32 lakh from Hili frontier in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur yesterday, reports BSS.
Commander of Badudebpur BGB Camp Subedar Rafikul Islam said a special BGB patrol team conducted a raid at Bottoli point near Hili border and seized three abandoned plastic sacks. After searching the sacks, the BGB members seized 1.33 lakh pieces of contraband cow-fattening ‘Practin’ tablets, 45,600 pieces of ‘Setmax’ tablets and 1.48 lakh pieces of ‘Limosolid’ tablets worth Tk 65.32 lakh.
However, none was arrested in this connection as the smugglers managed to flee away from the spot sensing the presence of BGB personnel. Later, the BGB authority deposited the seized drugs with the Hili Customs authorities in Dinajpur.
1 killed in bus-truck collision

A truck driver was killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck at Harikhali Bazar on the Jessore-Satkhira road in Sharsha upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Masum Billah, 24, son of Dalil Uddin, a resident of East Barandipara in the district town.
Police quoting local people said the accident took place when the truck collided head-on with a bus around 6:30pm, leaving truck driver Masum injured.
Later, Masum was sent to Jessore Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 8:30pm.
Thunderbolt kills man
HABIGANJ: A man was killed and five others were injured by a thunderbolt in Amu Tea Garden area under Chunarughat upazila of the district on Tuesday night, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Lokhon Vumiz, 50, a labourer of the tea garden.
Officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police Station Nirmalendu Chakrabarty said Lokhon Vumiz was struck by the thunderbolt in the area at 9pm and died on the spot.
The five injured were admitted to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex, the OC added.
1.5 lakh fish fries released
BAGERHAT: District Fisheries Department yesterday released 1.5 lakh different fish fries in ten open water bodies in Fakirhat upazila, reports BSS.
Chief Scientific Officer of the department Nittaranjan Biswas formally released the fish fries in the Gobin Desai Khal under Betaga union to boost fish production.
Upazila Fisheries Department released a total of 5,500-kg fish fries in the water bodies. District Fisheries Officer M Abdul Wadud, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahabub Rahman Sheikh, was present, among others, on the occasion.
Diploma in engineering course launched

Diploma course in engineering was launched at Chapainawabganj Government Technical School and College on Tuesday.
The opening ceremony of the course was held at the institution with principal of the college Engineer Arzed Ali in the chair. Superintendent of police TM Mujahidul Islam attended the programme as the chief guest.
Four-year diploma course in engineering has been launched at 64 technical school and colleges across the country for the session 2016-2017 and accordingly students were admitted. A total of 60 students were enrolled in the new trade of the college.
