Sherpur: A massive palm tree plantation programme, aimed at holding on to the heritage of the tropical tree, has got underway in the district recently, reports UNB.
The Department of Agricultural Expansion (DAE) has launched the palm tree plantation programme with its start in Nakla upazila.
Sherpur DAE deputy director M Ashraf Uddin said they have been planting palm trees in different places, including roadside, graveyard, Eidgah, school, college, madrasah and mosque in the upazila for several days, under the scheme initiated in response to the call of Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury.
He added the DAE is implementing the tree plantation programme and 10,000-12,000 palm saplings have been planted in the upazila so far under the project.
The DAE sources termed palm tree a cash crop.
Both palm juice and the kernel of the fruit have much nutrition value.
Shade of palm tree is not to affect any other crops underneath in any way rather than doing benefits.
A palm tree starts bearing fruits within 10-12 years after its planting and each tree gives 500 to 1500 fruits a year.
Palm trees which grow without being in care have a large role in preventing soil erosion.
Urfa Union Parishad Chairman M Rezaul Islam Hira said there have been planted a large number of palm trees in the upazila at the initiative of the DAE and local people are also assisting the department in this.
Nutrition Development Project director M Mehidi Masud said because of proper implementation of the programme palm will not lose its heritage and general people will be able to meet their nutrition deficiency through its multiple use.
DAE former Director General Dr M Enamul Haque Asha, also adviser of the Palm Tree Plantation Programme, said cake made of palm and mat, hand fan, cap and umbrella made of its leaf are traditions of Bangla culture.
Palm tree will be getting much more value as a resource once the project is implemented, he said.
Enamul Haque Asha said the cottage industry may be further developed depending on palm leaf and juice.
DEA Director General Dr Hamidur Rahman said the palm tree plantation programme has been taken as palm tree is a cash crop and there is no necessary of big land to implant it, even no care is needed for the tree and all the parts of the tree are useful.
