Containing militancy

JS body for amending pvt university act

UNB

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertaking yesterday suggested the government to bring necessary amendments to the Private University Act 2010 for enhancing transparency, accountability and dynamism in the administrative activities of the country’s private universities and thus effectively check militancy, reports UNB.
In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks, the committee came up with the recommendation at its 25th meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman Col (retd) Shawkat Ali in the chair.
The parliamentary watchdog expressed its grave concern over alleged links of university students and teachers with militant activities.
At the meeting, the committee wanted to know what steps the University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken against militant activities in the country’s higher educational institutions.
UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan informed the committee that various measures have already been taken to contain terrorist and militant activities in the universities.

The measures include formation of monitoring cells, scrutiny of data related to appointment of teachers and officials and admission of students, arrangement of anti-militant discussions, human chains and processions, detecting absent students, and formation of monitoring committees by the universities.
Besides, the UGC has taken measures for strict enforcement of clause 6 (10) of the Private University Act 2010 that states a proposed university should appoint a particular number of fulltime qualified teachers as the UGC deems for its each department, programme and course.
Committee members Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, Mohibur Rahman Manik, Mohammad Shubid Ali Bhuiyan, Abdur Rouf and Navana Akter, among others, attended the meeting.
