A monsoon depression over the north Bay of Bengal, off Gangetic West Bengal and the Bangladesh coast, intensified into a deep depression yesterday (Wednesday). It may inundate low-lying areas in 13 coastal districts with tidal surges 2-3 feet above normal astronomical tides.
According to a warning issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the districts are Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxipur, Borguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira, and their offshore islands and chars.
High winds and tides, along with drizzles, over the Padma since the morning disrupted ferry services, passenger launches and speed boats plying on the Shimulia and Kewrakandi routes. This made it difficult for people to cross the river, which is yet to return to its normal pre-flood condition.
