Philippines police yesterday arrested a former manager of a Manila-based bank linked to $81 million stolen from the Bangladesh Bank’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, report agencies.
Maia Deguito, the former manager of the RCBC branch where the money had been transferred, was arrested in a supermarket in Manila's business district for perjury.
The arrest warrant was issued on August 10. Deguito's legal counsel said the complainant was not identified in the arrest warrant.
Deguito also did not undergo preliminary investigation, which should have been the basis for the arrest, the lawyer said.
In April, then-RCBC president Lorenzo Tan sued Deguito and her lawyer Ferdinand Topacio for libel and false testimony over her statements on the $81 million heist involving Bangladesh central bank funds Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank (BB), the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and global financial messaging service (SWIFT) have expressed their commitment again to work together to recover the stolen money from the central bank's account with the New York Federal Reserve Bank, reports BSS.
They reiterated the commitment at a meeting in New York on Tuesday while discussing the technical details of the cyber crime and ways of beefing up security measures to prevent recurrence of such crime.
"A five-member team led by Deputy Governor Abu Hena M Razi Hasan left here on August 14 to join a meeting with the senior representatives of Fed and SWIFT on cyber heist that occurred in early February," BB General Manager FM Mokammel Huq told BSS. At the meeting, the representatives from all the three organisations also advocated bringing the perpetrators to justice in cooperation with the law enforcing agencies of the countries concerned.
