Worker falls to death from bldg
A construction worker died after falling from an under-construction building in the city’s Badda area early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Rafiq,28, son of Mohammad Majibur Rahman, a resident of Laksam upazila in Comilla district. Nasir, sub-inspector of Badda Police Station, said Rafiq fell down from a six-storey under-construction building at plot no. 38, road no. 11 of DIT Project in the area while working in it at about 5:30am. Later he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Building catches fire in capital
A fire broke out in a six-storey building at Jahan Super Market in the capital’s Mirpur Road on Wednesday morning.
Atiqul Alam, inspector of the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, said the fire originated from an electric board on the 4th floor of the building opposite Dhaka College around 11:48am and engulfed soon. On information, three units of fire brigade rushed in and put out the flame around 12:05pm, Atiqul added.
Five drug addicts jailed
A mobile court of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) here Tuesday afternoon sentenced five drug addicts to 20-day jail term each without labour, official sources said.
Earlier, the RpCC mobile court jointly with District Narcotics Control Department (DNCD) conducted separate drives in different areas of the city and caught the drug addicts red-handed while smoking ganja.
Officials of the City Corporation and DNCD and police forces from Kotwali Thana took part in the drives.
2 peddlers held with hemp
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two drug traders with 155 kilograms of hemp from Tama village under Mohanpur Upazila of the district early Tuesday, sources here said.
The arrested persons were identified as Shamsul Alam, 38, and Shariful Islam, 39. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force carried out a drive in the village at around 5.30 am and arrested them with huge hemp red-handed. A case was recorded with Mohanpur Police Station in this connection and the arrested persons along with the seized ganja were handed over to police.
RMG worker killed in road crash
A RMG worker was killed hit by a passenger bus at South Salna area under Gazipur city on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Monir Hossain, 25, son of Ramzan Ali of Tarabari area under Birol upazila in Dinajpur district. He was a worker of Promaker Sweater factory at Salna area of Gazipur city.
Sub-inspector of Nawjur highway police out post Mohammed Arif Hossain Bhuiyan said, a Mymensing bound passenger bus hit Monir Hossain while he was crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in front of ABC Eye Hospital in South Salna area on Tuesday at around 7.30 am, leaving Monir injured seriously. Locals rescued him and sent to Gazipur Shahid Taz Uddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. He died at the hospital at around 10.30 am.
38 vehicles seized in Ctg
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) during the last 24 hours filed 748 cases against CNG-run auto-rickshaws for not running their vehicles with proper documents in the city.
Besides, police also seized 38 vehicles including CNG auto rickshaws during the drives.
Mohammad Shahid Ullah, Deputy Director of BRTA told BSS that the move would continue against the meter-less taxies as well as the vehicles without registration and fitness.
"The combined teams of BRTA and police are on the road to take action against vehicles which are yet to run in the streets," he added.
