Different socio-cultural organisations observed the death anniversary of the poet with elaborate programmes.
Jatiya Kabita Parishad placed wreaths at the grave of the poet at Banani in the capital while a milad mahfil was held at his Shyamoli residence on the occasion.
Antarjatik Shahitto Sanskritik Shongjog, a cultural organisation, organised a discussion programme at the seminar hall of the Central Public Library in the afternoon.
Shamsur Rahman was born on October 23 in 1929 at Mahut-Tuli in old part of the capital Dhaka.
He wrote over 60 books of poetry and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature.
The major themes of his poetry and writings include liberalism, humanism, human relations and romanticism.
The great poet died of heart and kidney ailments on August 17 in 2006 after having been in a coma for 12 days.
