Wild baby elephant rescued

A baby wild elephant was rescued after it fell into a well at a village in Tayakocha forest bit area of Jhinaigati upazila in Sherpur yesterday.
A herd of the wild elephants from India crossed the border and entered the Gorocharan Dodnay village on Monday night and started damaging crops and vegetable.
Villagers then drove away the elephants by burning torches and making noise. But a baby elephant fell into a well in the village, said Jhinaigati UNO Salim Reza.
The herd of elephants came into the village in search of food, he added. Informed by villagers, a police team came to the spot and guarded the trapped elephant.
Members of the forest department and fire brigade with support from local people began rescue work in the morning and managed to bring the wild elephant out of the well, he added.
The baby elephant was released near its herd in the forest, said Tayakocha forest bit officer Asraful Islam.
Meanwhile, the elephant that came floating in floodwaters of the Brahmaputra from Assam 49 days ago, died in a swamp at Sharishabari in Jamalpur yesterday.
