Gulshan attack

Up to ‘8 more involved’

Police yesterday claimed of finding the involvement of seven to eight more suspected militants in the July 1 Gulshan militant attack. Monirul Islam, chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime Unit (CTTU) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), made the disclosure while addressing a media briefing at the DMP media centre in the capital yesterday. The CTTU chief said they have come to know the organisational identities of the suspects but refrained from disclosing those. He said that those suspects played vital roles in the Gulshan attack and added that the police were yet to get specific information about them although all of them were hiding inside the country. He, however, said that his unit was trying to trace the suspects. About the newly identified Gulshan attack mastermind Marzan, the CTTU chief said he was yet to be traced by the police.  About the rumor of arrests of Bangladesh-origin Canadian national Tamim Chowdhury and expelled army personnel Major Ziaul Haque, Islam said they were also out of trace. About the evidence against former North South University teacher Hasnat Reza Karim, Monirul said we arrested him in the Gulshan attack case after finding out his past involvement in militancy. Some other information, including the photos of him with the Gulshan attackers, were also instrumental to his arrest, he added. He also divulged that the police were yet to find evidence against Canadian university student Tahmid Hasib Khan, also the son of an influential industrialist in the country. We are interrogating him to glean more information, he said.
