Income statement of two major parties

AL’s surplus, BNP’s deficit

AL’s surplus, BNP’s deficit

The country’s two major political parties—the ruling Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—yesterday submitted their financial reports to the Election Commission (EC). AL in its report said it had a surplus balance of Tk. 3.38 crore at the end of the 2015 calendar year, while its arch rival, the BNP, stated it had run up a deficit of Tk. 14 lakh. AL treasurer HN Ashiqur Rahman and AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap submitted their party's income and expenditure report to the EC. The BNP chairperson’s adviser, AKM Aminul Haque, and the party’s joint secretary general, Moazzem Hossain Alal, submitted their financial report to the poll panel. EC secretary Mohammad Sirajul Islam received the reports. The ruling AL earned Tk. 7.11 lakh and spent Tk. 3.73 lakh, while the BNP earned Tk. 1.73 lakh and spent Tk. 1.87 lakh during this period. The representatives of both political parties spoke to waiting reporters after submitting their audit reports to the EC at the Secretariat. AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap said the party had earned more than its expenditure. The party’s financial statement would also be put up on its website.
He said the main sources of their party’s income were contributions from party leaders and activists, donations, sale of party nomination forms and publications. Salaries and festival bonus of employees, political programmes, other events, and the distribution of relief materials formed the main heads of expenditure. There was some Tk. 20.39 crore in the party’s fund in early 2015, which rose to Tk. 23.87 crore at the end of the year, he added. BNP leader Aminul Haq said they had a deficit of around Tk. 14 lakh last year, which would be adjusted with the party’s previous income. Talking to this correspondent yesterday, BNP leader Moazzem Hossain Alal said, “The party had to spend on some unexpected matters this year. You know our party leaders and activists faced police harassment and are still facing the problem. The party helped the families of those victims from its funds and this is the main cause behind the deficit.”
