‘Development projects to be floated’

The government has taken a plan to bring the marginalised communities like river gypsies (commonly known as bedes), blacksmiths, potters, fishermen, goldsmiths, bamboo and cane workers, carpenters, sweetmeat makers, and barbers into the mainstream of economy to accelerate the country's growth further.

"Development projects will be floated for ensuring the overall welfare and development of these communities in the coming days," said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in the capital yesterday. 
The minister also revealed the official figures of the total households and the total number of population belonging to these marginalised communities. 
According to him, the number of river gypsy households was 15,262 while their total population was 69,021. The number of potter households was 31,742 and their total population was 1,51,598. The number of fishermen households was 7,79,462 and their population was 31,09,933. The number of households of blacksmith was 32,453 while their overall population was 1,38,193 in the country.
