RAJSHAHI: Department of Social Forestry (DSF) has distributed 1000 saplings of different fruit trees among the people at free of cost in the city yesterday, reports BSS.
The DSF officials arranged the daylong distribution programme in observance of the National Mourning Day and 41st Martyrdom anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the venue of ongoing fortnight long tree fair-2016.
“Indeed plantation of adequate fruit trees is very important for ensuring nutritional demands, food security, ecological balance and biodiversity,” said Divisional Forest Officer Imran Ahmed while speaking on the occasion.
Highlighting various significances of the fruit and fruit trees in terms of the present social and national aspects he put emphasis on transforming the tree plantation campaign into a social movement.
The DSF intends to encourage and motivate the people towards more tree plantation, he added.
According to a Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) report less than eight percent of Bangladesh’s surface area is covered by forest which is one of the lowest in the world.
There is no alternative to expansion of this up to 25 percent of the total landscape through extensive tree plantations.
There are fallow lands around houses of many farmers. These can be brought under fruit cultivation. Even fruit cultivation can be taken up on the courtyards of dwelling houses.
