A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday between Public Libraries Department and British Council for turning all libraries, under Public Library, into digital.
Director General of Public Libraries Department Ashish Kumar Sarkar and Country Director of British Council Barbara Wickham inked the agreement on behalf of their respective sides for the next five-year.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor was present in the MoU signing function.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) will provide financial support to implement the programme under implementing British Council project’s “Libraries Unlimited”.
The first phase of the project will be implemented at a cost of Taka 18.40 crore by next 18 months. In first phase, a total of 30-library will be turned into digital, reports BSS.
Asaduzzaman Noor said the libraries will be playing a vital role to accelerate the cultural movement against fundamentalism and militancy. The main objectives of the programme to develop the library and to encourage the members of young generation to go to library, he added.
Among others, Cultural Affairs Secretary Aktari Mamtaz and Additional Secretary M Monjurur Rahman were present on the occasion.
