Foreign cigarettes seized
Customs intelligence seized 90,000 packets of contraband foreign cigarettes worth about Taka 20 lakh from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital early yesterday.
The cigarettes, kept inside 450 cartons in three bags, were seized from the possession of an Indian national Raja Mohammad, an official said.
Raja came from Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia by a flight MH-0196 and the bags were found at Belt area of the airport’s Customs Hall around 2am, he also said.
The seized cigarettes are of the Easy brand of South Korea and worth about Taka 20 lakh, he added. Legal action was taken to this end.
14 tourists hurt in road accident
At least 14 tourists were received injuries when a bus named Mehedi Paribahan hit a road side light post at 9:30Pm on Saturday night.
The incident occurred in Rupatoli area of Barisal city. Local source said that a tourist bus for Bagra from Kuakata hit the light post while crossing the place as driver lost control over the vehicle.
All the injured were the residents of Bogra and admitted to Barisal Sher –e- Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Rally against drug trading held
The residents of ward no-25, under the banner of Madok-O Patitabriti Uchched Committee brought out a procession in the Rangpur city yesterday and submitted memorandums to Deputy Commissioner and Police Super Rangpur.
Rezaul Islam Millon, Secretary Mohanagar Dokan Malik Samity led the rally. Later the committee laid siege to Deputy Commissioner Office and Police Super Office and submitted memorandum. In memorandum they alleged that “One Anzuman Ara Begum Suli has been doing drug trading and other unsocial activities” under the nose of the law enforcing agencies in the area. They urged the authority concerned to arrest the culprit and give punishment persons responsible to save the society.
Youth found dead in Ctg
A young man was found dead at Baromashia village in Suyabil union of Fatickchhari upazila early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ripon Dey, 23, son of Gonez Dey, a resident of the village.
Helal Uddin, sub-inspector of Vuspur Police Station, said Ripon went missing on Saturday night while he was returning from his workplace. After a frantic search, family members spotted his stabbed body on Chabagan Road in the area early in the morning and informed police.
Later police recovered the body and sent it Chittagong Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
22 cocktails seized in Savar
Police recovered 22 cocktails from Khagan Bazaar area under Birulia union in Savar upazila yesterday morning.
Being informed, a team of Savar thana police rushed to the spot and seized the cocktails after searching a bag, said Tarikul Islam, sub inspector of Birulia police camp.
The cocktails were kept there for committing subversive activities, he said. A case was filed in this connection.
