Watchful eyes on prayer rooms, classrooms at schools

OCs cautioned about possible militants attacks on national mourning day

The DMP commissioner, Md Asaduzzaman Miah, on Wednesday ordered increasing of police surveillance on newly- appointed employees in private and other non-government offices in the capital to further resist militant attacks, sources in law enforcement agencies have exclusively told The Independent.
While addressing the monthly crime conference at the DMP headquarters in the city, Miah said militants might get their own men appointed in offices or at other workplaces to get regular updates about the movement of targeted persons.
If it's an office, the local police must find out whether each and every one entering the office is being checked by metal detectors as part of preventive measures.
About new recruitment at workplaces in the city, the police must ensure the new recruits' backgrounds have been properly checked.
Miah said militants might in advance put their own men at workplaces in the capital. These people will send information about the offices and business enterprises that have been targeted by militants for carrying out attacks. They will secretly follow targeted persons and monitor the situation at their targeted places. Militants will be informed about the time when targeted people come and when they leave, he added.
"In case of schools, we must be alert so that militant leaders can't put their members in educational institution," the DMP chief cautioned.
Miah said militants in the guise of students might attempt to radicalise innocent students in classrooms, prayer rooms or even in refreshment rooms of educational institutions in the capital. Actually, recruiters are not students and this is why they do not attend their own classes, he added.
"We've come to know that a North South University student, involved in militancy, used to attend other classes and not his own only to radicalise students," the city police chief added.
Inspector Dadon Fakir, officer-in-charge (OC) of police station, who was present at the meeting, said most of the instructions centred around ways to resist militancy. "We've ordered strict vigilance, saying militants may try to carry out attacks targeting mourning day programmess marking the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," he added.
Miah also vowed to take disciplinary action if allegations of harassment of ordinary citizens are made during the ongoing anti-militant block raids in the city. The conference also dwelt on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s warning of having information about possible terror attacks in the country. At a cabinet meeting in July, the PM had said that there was information that terror groups were planning major attacks across the country in August.
“You (ministers) must be vigilant and move about carefully in August as terror groups will try to destabilise the country through attacks. You must be alert and watchful as terror groups may not implement their sinister design in just one month,” she had said.
