Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful‘s three-year domestic ban will end today, making him eligible to play in domestic cricket. He will return home from London today morning.
ICC gave clarification certificate to Ashraful. And so, he is eligible to play NCL, BPL, DPL, BCL like domestic tournament from now.
Ashraful, who is now 32-year-old, was accused of spot and match-fixing scam during the second edition of the money-rich Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2013.
Anti-corruption tribunal formed by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) initially banned Ashraful for 8 years with Tk 10 lakh (USD12,500 approx) as fine for his wrongdoing in BPL-2 in June 2014.
Thereafter, his ban was reduced to five years with two-year suspension subject to his participation in BCB and ICC anti-corruption education and training programme following his appeal in September at that year. Both BCB and ICC have appealed against the ban reduction but were unsuccessful later on.
Ashraful therefore will still not be eligible to feature in international cricket and the other prized T20 leagues for another two years.
A BCB press release in September 2014 had stated that “upon production of a certificate of good conduct from the ICC, he will be eligible to return to cricket on or about August 13, 2016”.
Ashraful will be allowed to resume first-class domestic cricket in Bangladesh as well as non-first-class domestic cricket in other ICC members’ jurisdictions from August 13 if the certificate is issued by the ICC.
BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said the board was seeking clarification from the ICC to get details on what types of domestic tournaments Ashraful would be eligible to participate in.
