Woman beaten dead ‘by husband’
Benapole: A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband at Pulerhat Berbari village in Sadar upazila of Jessore district early yesterday, reports UNB.
Quoting locals, Ilias Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said Nazir Islam, son of Nazrul Islam used to torture his wife Murshida Begum, 24, for dowry.
On Thursday night, Nazir picked up a quarrel with his wife Murshida over the issue and beat her up mercilessly in the dead of night, leaving Murshida dead.
Later, Nazir hanged the body of Murshida with a mango tree in a bid to probe it a suicide case. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital. The body bore several injury marks, said the OC. Police could not arrest Nazir as he went into hiding.
Man held with firearms, ammo

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in two separate drives arrested two men along with three firearms, 16 rounds of bullet and five magazines in Shibganj upazila on Thursday.
The arrestees were identified as Babu, 26, son of late Abu Bakar Siddique of Koilardiarbazar area of Shibganj upazila, and Benjir Alam, 20, son of Rafiqul Islam of Uparchakpara village of the same upazila.
A team from the RAB led by Assistant Police Super Md Nure Alam conducted a raid in Katanitola Primary School field in Shibganj upazila and arrested firearms trader
Babu along with one pistol, 6 rounds of bullet and a magazine.
Besides, another team led by Assistant Police Super Md Nure Alam conducted another raid in Koilabari area of Shibganj upazila and arrested firearms trader Benjir Alam in possession of two pistols, 10 rounds of bullet and four magazines around 10:30am.
1 held with Yaba in Lalmonirhat
LALMONIRHAT: Police in a drive, arrested a drug trader with 80 pieces of Yaba tablets from Karbala Dighi area under Hatibandha upazila of the district on Thursday night, reports BSS.
The arrested person was identified as Nuruzzaman, 26, son of Aminur Rahman of West Bag village under Hatibandha upazila of the district. According to police sources, acting on secret information police team nabbed one Nuruzzaman, from Karbala Dighi area and recovered 80 pieces of Yaba tablets from his possession.
50 arrested in Jessore
JESSORE: Police arrested 50 persons from nine upazilas of the district on different charges on Thursday, reports BSS.
Police conducted raids in those areas from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
Jessore Kotwali Thana police arrested 22 persons, Chougacha Thana police three persons, Sarsha Thana police five persons, Zikorgacha Thana police five persons, Benapol Thana police two persons, keshobpur Thana police two persons, Monirumpur Thana police seven persons, Avoynagar Thana police three persons and Bagarpara Thana police one person.
