A family involved in Awami League (AL) politics has sought the Prime Minister’s intervention to save themselves from a local AL leader. “We are helpless. My family is under threat. Nuru Mondal has threatened to kill my entire family,” Golam Mahbubur Rahman, vice-chairman of the Goalanda upazila parishad and also president of the Goalanda Poura Awami League, told reporters at the Jatiya Press Club in the city yesterday (Friday).
He alleged that Nazrul Islam Mondal, alias Nuru Mondal, chairman of the Daulatdia union parishad in Rajbari district, is involved in various crimes like "toll" collection, drug business, and trafficking of women and children.
The local administration and law enforcement agencies have not taken any action against Mondal, Rahman alleged. Reports about his activities have been published in newspapers and also shown in the investigative TV programme, "Talas", on the Independent channel, he said.
“My children have stopped going to school for the last two weeks. We are hiding from Mondal and his men. We request the Prime Minister to take legal action against listed criminal Mondal and others,” Rahman said.
Written complaints have been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office, home minister, IGP and the DG of RAB against Mondal and his aides—Tofazzal Hossain Topu, Tomser, Julhas Molla, Ashraf, Harun Molla, Kaddus Molla, Token Sarder, Rubel, Tutul, Ayub member, Halim, "hatkata" Musa and "killer" Farid—he said.
Asked whether a complaint has been lodged with any district level leader, Rahman replied: “Yes, I have informed the district AL president, Jillul Hakim, MP. But no action has been taken so far.”
Contacted over the phone, Hakim told The Independent that he is yet to get such a complaint. “So far as I know, Rahman is a nice person. There may be political rivalry between them. I suggest that he lodge a written complaint. Action will be taken as per the party constitution,” he said. This correspondent failed to reach Mondal despite repeated attempts.
