While the rains across the country, notably in the south-western region, have slowed down after departure of the depression on Thursday, chances of increasing rains over the next five days are being forecast by meteorologists.
The apprehension of further rainfall is arising from a trough of the depression left behind in the northeast Bay of Bengal, which would spur the monsoon into further activity.
A meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office, Ruhul Kuddus, said, “The depression has moved away far from Bangladesh to India’s Jharkhand state to the west and may move further to central India.”
But Jessore, which received 265mm of rainfall on Thursday, was quiet, with only traces of rain yesterday. The river Kobadak in Jhikargacha of the district, however, was flowing 79cm above its danger level as a result of the heavy rains, thanks to the overnight depression. The rains yesterday were mainly concentrated along the south-eastern coast, where Sandwip received 54mm of rains till 6am. In nearby Hatiya, till noon yesterday, the rains totalled 65mm.
