Police suspect that the Gulshan attackers sent photos of their operation at Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 to a person who directly supervised the attack from the outside. This supervisor, in turn, sent the photos of the victims to the mastermind, Tamim Chowdhury. According to the additional deputy police commissioner of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), all this supervision was done online. Additional police commissioner Monirul Islam, who is also the CTTC chief, said yesterday that this supervisor was suspected to be a youth named Marzan. He added that this may not be the suspect’s real name.
“Marzan’s name surfaced during the investigation. He is currently staying in Dhaka. He seems to be an educated youth. We've obtained a photo of this person,” said Monirul Islam.
masterminds of recent militant attacks in the country have been identified. Those who have been identified are under the surveillance of law enforcers, and a process is going on to arrest them, the minister added.
Briefing reporters at DMP media centre on Friday, CTTC chief Monirul Islam said they came to know that Tamim Chowdhury along with the slain five militants came out from a flat of Bashundhara residential area and went near the Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 at around 8:45 pm on foot.Later, the five militants stormed the café but Tamim Chowdhury fled the scene, he said. “After interrogating some suspected militants both in Dhaka and North Bengal, we’ve confirmed that Marzan was staying in Kallyanpur from where he contacted and monitored the Gulsghan attackers,” said.
Monirul adding, “We got the photo of Marzan from a detained militant’s mobile phone. The photo was released through DMP mobile apps ‘Hello CT’. DMP urged people to provide information about the person of the photo. Replying to a question, Monirul Islam said the most wanted mastermind Tamim Chowdhury and sacked army man Maj (sacked) Zia might have been staying in Dhaka.
“We’re trying our level best to track down the two absconders,” he added.
