Tobacco control laws being violated in Rangpur region: ATMA

Members of Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) yesterday expressed concern over violation of the amended Tobacco Control Act (TCA) and Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act by tobacco factories and companies in Rangpur region, reports BSS. They expressed such concerns at the regional meeting of ATMA held at regional office of Association for Community Development (ACD) in the city. The journalist-members of ATMA from allover Rangpur region participated in the meeting with member of it Rangpur regional committee and senior journalist Liyakat Ali Badal in the chair. Moderated by Programme Officer of ACD Shariful Islam, ATMA’s central committee member Mahbubul Islam, its members Harunur Rashid Lal, Kashi Kumar Das, Manik Sarker Manik, Moynul Islam, SM Piyal, Sultan Ahmed, Khorshed Alam Sagar, Ujjal Chakraborty and Programme Officer of ACD Matiur Rahman addressed the meeting.
Project Coordinator of ACD Ehsanul Amin Emon shared information based on recently conducted survey and monitoring activities at different areas on slower enforcement pace and violation of the tobacco control laws by different tobacco factories and companies.
He said many tobacco companies and factories have been marketing their tobacco products without or partially exhibiting mandatory pictorial winnings on the packets violating the concerned tobacco control laws.
“The authorities concerned have been conducting mobile courts in inadequate frequencies for strict enforcement of the tobacco control laws,” he said adding that smoking in public places and violation of tobacco control laws were still continuing.
“The packets of ‘Bidi’ being produced by Litan Bidi Factory, Zahid Bidi Factory, Shahid Bidi Factory and Sabuz Bidi Factory of Rangpur do not bear any pictorial warning while Ansar Bidi Factory, Rakib Bidi factory and Aziz Bidi Factory are putting pictorial warming without properly following the concerned laws,” he said.
