The government will not allow slaughtering of sacrificial animals by madrasa students under 18 during Eid-ul-Azha. Abdul Malek, secretary in the local government and rural development ministry, told reporters yesterday (Thursday) that such an instruction is already in place, but the government will enforce it strictly from this year. “As per a resolution issued by the LGRD, madrasa students, below 18 years of age, will not be allowed to take part in slaughtering of animals,” he said.
The secretary was briefing reporters following a preparatory meeting chaired by LGRD minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. He said the meeting fixed 2,943 places in 11 city corporation areas across the country for slaughtering animals on the Eid-ul-Azha day.
A total of 11 mobile courts, led by the chief executive officer of the respective city corporations, will be active in the cities. The authorities will take legal action against violators, if the instructions are not be followed strictly, he warned.
According to the decision, there will be 4,885 Imams and 12,638 butchers for slaughtering purposes. All activities relating to slaughtering of animals will have to be completed within two to three hours at the places fixed. About 716,940 animals are likely to be slaughtered in city corporation areas, and 35 to 40 lakh across the country, meeting sources said. City dwellers have been requested to slaughter their sacrificial animals at places fixed and remove the waste within three days. City mayors, including Annisul Huq of the DNCC, Syed Khokan of the DSCC and AZM Nasir and Ivy Rahman of the NCC were present at the meeting.
