The monsoon depression, which had formed in the northern Bay of Bengal and had been spread over Jessore, left for West Bengal yesterday morning.
The depression left the region wet with the heaviest of rains, totalling 265mm, which swelled the Kobadak river and caused it to flow 63cm above its danger level. After Jessore, it moved to Chuadanga, which recorded 165mm of rains. This also contributed to the river going into spate at Jhikargacha, said sources at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
Meanwhile, the met office has asked the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra to lower the local cautionary warning signal no. 3 as the sea has calmed down following the departure of the depression. It, however, left the monsoon active over Bangladesh, causing the rains that were formed in the early hours of Wednesday, sources in the met office said.
Regarding the sudden rise in the Kobadak, FFWC executive Sajjad Hossain said, “This would not last long because the river’s channels have become silted and are unable to flush the sudden onrush of rainwaters as fast as they come pouring into the area.”
He also said, “The overall flood situation in the country may continue to improve in the next 72 hours.”
Everything depends on rains, locally and mainly in the upstream. Forecasts, however, suggest no heavy rains will occur immediately, Hossain added.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has requested the Padma Multipurpose Bridge (PMB) authorities to allow use of its dredged channel in the Padma for the safe movement of ferry services on the Shimulia–Kewrakandi route. The ferry services have been imperilled by the swift currents in the river.
