The operational activities at the much-hyped Payra Sea Port, the third sea port of the country, will begin on Saturday, gearing up the country’s export and import, and goods transportation, reports UNB
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the sea port, located in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district, through a videoconferencing from her official residence Ganabhaban in the capital.
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan and acting chairman of the newly-built sea port Captain M Saidur Rahman will be present during the inauguration ceremony.
Meanwhile, ‘MV Fortune Bird’, a Chinese commercial ship, has already reached the outer-anchorage of the seaport with some 53 tonnes of stone on board while two ships—one from India and another from Malaysia—are expected to reach the seaport soon.
Through the inauguration, the first goal, out of total three, of bringing clinker, fertiliser and other goods-laden commercial vessels at the outer-anchorage and carry those to other parts of the country through lighterages will be achieved.
The two other goals are to construct a container terminal and a bulk terminal by 2018 and develop others facilities in several phases to make the port a complete one by 2023.
The government has already worked out several long- and mid-term plans to start its full-fledged activities. The total activities to develop the port have been divided into 19 components and six of which have been sent to the ministries concerned.
