Tree plantation programme
Pro Vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Professor Dr Abul Hossain on Wednesday inaugurated the tree plantation programme-2016 by planting a yellow plant of Shimul tree in front of exam controller office on the campus in Savar.
JU Treasurer Professor Dr. Abul Khair, Deans of the different faculties, Provost of the different dormitories, Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique as well as teachers and officers of the university were present at the function among others. University sources said about five hundreds trees including Shimul, Palash and Buddhonarikel will be planted in different spots on the campus in this rainy season.
Three drug addicts jailed
A mobile court of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) on Wednesday sentenced three drug addicts to 20-day jail term each without labour, the city corporation sources said.
The mobile court jointly with District Narcotics Control Department (DNCD) conducted separate drives in different areas of the city and arrested the drug addicts red-handed while smoking ganja. Officials of RpCC and DNCD and police forces from Kotwali Thana took part in the drives. Later, Executive Magistrate of the RpCC mobile court SM Golam Kibria sentenced the arrested persons to 20-day jail term each under the Narcotics Control Act of 1990 after hearing on the charges brought against them.
The convicted drug addicts are Tauhidul Islam, 27, of Baniyapara area, Sahanur Mian, 30, of Palichara area and Arif Hossain, 25, of Nurpur area in the city. The convicted persons were later sent to Rangpur Central Jail in the afternoon.
One held with yaba in Ctg
Chittagong Metropolitan Police arrested a pickup van helper with 5000 pieces of yaba tablets from city's Chandgaon area on Wednesday morning.
The arrested was Khair Mia, 25, hailed from south Anandapur village of Kotwali thana in Comilla district.
On a tip-off, a team of the Chandgaon Police halt a Comilla-bound pickup van in the area and seized the contraband drugs from a spare wheel of the vehicle, said SAM Shajhana Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station. "The arrested persons brought the yaba tablets hiding inside the spare wheel behind the pickup van coming from Cox's Bazar", the OC said, adding that police also detained the pickup van and filed a case under Narcotics Control Act.
Fire breaks out in building
A fire broke out in a high rise building 'Tokyo Plaza-2' at Nayamati hosiery belt near DIT market under Narayanganj Model police station here on Wednesday.
According to Narayanganj fire service and civil defense sources, the fire originated from the 4th floor of the 16-storied building in the evening.
A huge quantity of garments wastes were stock-piled on the 4th floor and the blaze engulfed quickly the 5th floor. Four fire-extinguishing units from Narayanganj, Hajiganj, Postgola and Demra put out the fire within 45 minutes. Deputy assistant director (DAD) Din Mony Sarkar said the fire originated from an electric short-circuit.
Man arrested with fake notes
Members of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) in a drive arrested a fake currency trader with huge counterfeit notes worth about Taka 20,000 from Banglabazar area under Biyazid thana in the city on Wednesday night.
The arrested was Mohammad Jahid alias Jabed, 26, son of Nurul Islam, hailed from Feni district.
A team of the Biyazid Thana Police conducted a raid in the area and nabbed
Jabed while he was waiting for exchanging the fake notes at about 10.30 pm.
Police seized 20 pieces fake notes denomination to Taka 1000 from his possession.
