RANGPUR: Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu on Thursday announced the annual development budget of over Taka 645.05 crore without increasing taxes for the next 2015-2016 fiscal, reports BSS.
The city mayor announced the budget at an open ceremony at city corporation hall room with over Taka 4.37 crore as surplus without increasing existing taxation rates and expanding taxation areas. The proposed budget for the next fiscal year is higher by over Taka 144.91 crore than that of the annual development budget of Taka 500.14 crore for the current 2014-2015 fiscal. The city councilors, chief executive officer of RCC Ruhul Amin Khan, its superintending engineer Emdad Hossain, secretary Fazlul Kabir, officials and employees, civil society members, professionals and elite of the city were present.
Before announcing the proposed budget, the mayor narrated the massive infrastructural and other development works already done in the city since assuming responsibility at his office on February 19 in 2013 as the first elected mayor.
Speaking on the occasion and answering various questions asked by the journalists, the mayor said the prevailing tax rates will remain unchanged for the city dwellers in the proposed budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal.
The proposed budget includes income of over Taka 56.48 crore from revenue earnings and Taka 588.57 crore as development
assistance from the annual development programmes (ADP), special government allocations, different donor agencies and foreign- assisted projects.
Under the proposed budget, over Taka 4.37 crore will remain as surplus after meeting all costs of over Taka 640.68 crore for infrastructural development and other works to be conducted during the next fiscal for ensuring better services to the city dwellers.
Of them, the costs of over Taka 53.18 crore will be met from the revenue earnings and Taka 587.50 crore from the development assistance of the ADP, government allocations and different donor agencies and foreign- assisted projects.
The proposed budget has put special emphasis on health, water supply, drainage and sewerage systems, primary health care, supply of medicines, sanitation,
adaptation with climate change impacts and various sectors being assisted by the government, development partners and different donor agencies. The proposed budget also includes allocations for education, garbage management, social afforestation, alleviation of urban poverty, development activities in the extended areas of the city and residential buildings for the extremely poor and slum dwellers.
The mayor sought cooperation of the city dwellers for proper implementation of the proposed budget keeping in view the implementation of the master plan for turning Rangpur into one of the most modern and beautiful cities in the region.
