Tk119 crore annual budget of Jahangirnagar University (JU) for the fiscal year 2015-16 was passed on Saturday with deficit of Tk516.5 lakh, in presence of its Senate members.
The budget was approved at the 34th Senate meeting held the at university’s Senate Bhaban with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam in the chair.
Treasurer Prof Abul Khayer presented the budget in the session also attended by journalists. This year, budget has been increased in some 28 sectors.
Tk 114 crore revised budget for JU was also passed for the last fiscal year 2014-2015.
According to the budget, the university will earn Tk 12.5 crore from its own sources in the fiscal year 2015-16 while the rest will come from the University Grants Commission.
Speaking at the Senate meeting, Prof Farzana Islam urged the government to increase the budget in the education sector in the fields of research, academic activities, students' facilities and infrastructural development.
She said three dormitories and buildings of some departments are under construction which will help solve accommodation problem. VC Prof Farzana Islam, Pro-VC Dr Prof Abul Hossen and Registrar Abu Bakkar Siddique thanked the guests and senate members for their participation.
The Senate elected Prof Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir and Motahar Hossen Mollah syndicate members from among Senate members while Ibrahim Hossen Khan was elected syndicate member from special citizen category and A H M Sadrul Alam Harun was elected as senate member to Finance Committee.
Prof Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir, also a former VC of the university, said the administration should stress bringing handsome allocation for infrastructural projects, academic, research purposes and rest of the works.
