CHITTAGONG: The unremitting downpour for the last five consecutive days caused serious disruption in civic life, port and business activities while thousands of people are marooned in five upazilas of the district, reports BSS.
More areas in the city and district have been inundated with flash flood though the city and district experienced lighter downpour yesterday comparing with last few days.
Loading and unloading of goods at the outer anchorage of prime sea port of the country in Chittagong have remained suspended for four straight days due to inclement weather.
Due to heavy rainfall and rough weather, unloading of goods from mother vessels at the outer anchorage remained halted from Wednesday. Port sources said 13 ships with eight lakh tonnes of goods including pulse, wheat, soybeans, salt, and clinker at outer anchorage of the port, could not be unloaded due to stormy weather.
Water Transport Cell executive director Mahbub Rashid told BSS that none hired lighter ships on Monday to unload cargo from mother vessels due to rough weather.
Due to stiff monsoon, maritime port of Chittagong, has been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.
All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice, says the met office.
The incessant heavy shower forced Shah Amanat International Airport to delay its most of the flights operation since 7.30 am yesterday as its runway went underwater for a few hours, airport sources said.
However, the flight operation in Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport was as usual after 1 pm. Sufferings of the people in five upazilas of the district know no bounds when bulk of the district areas went under four to five feet water for unprecedented and unrelieved heavy downpour throughout the day.
Mezbah Uddin, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong said most of the villages of Raozann, Chandhonaish, Satkania, Lohagara and Banskhali upazilas are reeling under three to five feet deluge while district administration has already allocated 50 tonnes of rice and Tk eight lakh for the flood affected people.
Additional allocation for those flood affected people will be sent from today, he added.
The heavy downpour accompanied by strong thunderbolt began Sunday night and continued till filing of this report caused huge water logging and inundation of the dwelling houses of the low lying areas.
Besides, the coastal regions of Chittagong were swept by a wind-driven surge by 5-7 feet above the normal tide, official sources said.
Patenga Meteorological office recorded 679.3 millimeters rainfall in last five days and 49.3 mm of rainfall alone in last 24 hours ending 3 pm yestedray.
The Met office forecast further said there will be moderate to heavy rainfall in next twenty-four hours in Chittagong region.
