Sirajganj: A mobile court here sentenced nine individuals to different terms of imprisonment for lifting sand illegally from the Jamuna River in Sadar upazila on Tuesday, reports UNB.
The convicted are Rafiqul Islam, son of Bahoti village in Sadar upazila; Jahidul Islam, son of Mahar Ali of Kukar Char in Jamalpur; Jalal Hossain, son of Hasan Mridha of Changpara village and Manir Hossain, son of Chunnu Gharani of Pashchim Lalpara village and Sohel Mahmud, son of Jalal Bharani of Taltoli village in Barguna; Shariful Islam, son of Samer Ali, and Jakir Hossain, son of Shah Jamal, both residents of Mohammadpur village in Jamalpur; Saber Ali, son of Anwar Hossain of Parkhoilsa village, and Abdul Baset, son of Nizam Uddin of Matikata village in Tangail district.
Executive magistrate of the upazila Brenjon Chambugong said tipped off, the mobile court, led by him, conducted a drive in the river area in the afternoon and arrested the nine for illegal sand extraction through dredging.
Later, the mobile court awarded them various term jails.
