RANGPUR: The people of Haragachh union under Kawnia upazila here yesterday finally set up an example of social advancement through declaring the union free from the decades-old ordeal of child marriage, reports BSS.
Chairman of Haragachh union Rakibul Hassan Polash formally declared the union free from child marriage while presiding over a colourful ceremony arranged at the union parishad auditorium this afternoon.
Kawnia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syeed Farhad Hossain attended the ceremony as the chief guest.
Kawnia upazila Vice-chairman Shefali Khatun, Upazila Muktijoddha Commander Md Suruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Kawnia Thana Abdul Kader Zilani and Women Affairs Officer Nuresh Kawser Jahan, attended as the special guests.
Madrasha Superintendent Moulana Abdus Sattar, Principal Sekendar Ali, Awami League leader Dr Mahfuzar Rahman Basunia, journalist Sarwarul Alam Mukul, union members Samina Khatun, Mokbul Hossain and Abdus Salam also spoke on the occadsion.
A large number of socio-cultural and political leaders, professionals, religious leaders, marriage registrars, community leaders, students, teachers, public representatives, men, women and human rights activists were present.
The speakers congratulated the people of Haragachh union for setting up the example through taking an unequivocal decision of not arranging any more child marriage of their sons and daughter in future. Taking part in the discussion, the local people firmly declared they would not repeat previous mistakes and continue dedicated efforts in convincing all people in the union to boycott child marriage for welfare of their children and next generations.
The chief guest called upon the common people for building a healthy society free from child marriage, dowry, superstition, malnutrition, maternal and child deaths, repression on women and children and to ensure women empowerment.
Later, the local people took part in a mass signature campaign to keep every family in the union free from the curse of child marriage in future through collective initiatives.
