Foreign minister stresses Rohingya repatriation

Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali stressed that the voluntary repatriation of Myanmar refugees, popularly known as Rohingyas, back to their homes in the Rakhine State of Myanmar is the durable solution to the protracted refugee situation in Bangladesh.
He said this when the newly-appointed Country Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Shinji Kubo presented his credentials to him at the ministry yesterday.
The foreign minister alluded to the positive momentum generated by the recent change in the leadership in Myanmar and mentioned the recent visit of Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque to Myanmar as a goodwill envoy, said a foreign ministry press release.
He expressed deep appreciation of the government to UNHCR for its continued support to Myanmar refugees residing in Bangladesh.
The UNHCR representative acknowledged efforts of the government in dealing with a large number of refugees.
He also assured that the UNHCR will continue to work with the government of Bangladesh to find a durable solution to refugee issue.
Meanwhile, newly-appointed Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Ignatov met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam at the latter’s office yesterday.
During the meeting, they voiced their opinions in favour of expanding the existing economic relations and discussed the issue related to making the banking services easier to enhance trade.
