Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team left for Durban in the early hours of Sunday by a flight of Qatar Airways to play a reciprocal series against the hosts South Africa.
Last April South Africa toured Bangladesh and played a seven-match youth ODI series, where the tourists had lost the series to Bangladesh with the margin of 6-1.
During the 25-day-long away tour, the visiting side will play the same number of matches against the young Proteas. All the matches will be held at two different venues of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Nazmul Abedin Fahim, national manager of BCB Game Development, stated this at a press conference at media centre of Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
“We’ve set a two-year plan, which we formulated after the last World Cup. As part of the plan, the boys are heading to South Africa to play a string of matches. Hopefully, it will give them an enormous match-practice preparation ahead of the World Cup,” said Nazmul Abedin.
The eleventh edition of the ICC Under-19 World Cup will be held in Bangladesh, spanning from January-February with the participation of 16 teams.
Before the onset of the series, both teams will face off in a warm-up match, which will be held at Chatsworth Cricket Oval in Durban on June 4.
The first two matches of the series will be played at Sahara Stadium, Kingsmead in Durban on July 5 and 7 respectively.
Coming back to Durban for the last two matches, both teams will play another three youth ODI matches to be held at Pietermaritzburg Oval on July 10, 12 and 15.
The last matches of the series will be staged at Chatsworth Cricket Oval and Sahara Stadium of Kingsmead in Durban on June 17 and 19 before returning home on July 20.
“The way we defeated defending champions South Africa in the home yard, it will give us impetus to do well there. Hopefully we will take up a good preparation for the World Cup playing a better brand of cricket,” Mehedi Hasan Meraj, captain of Bangladesh Under-19, said in his reaction to media.
Prior to their Dhaka departure, Bangladesh held a month-long training camp at BKSP, where they took necessary all kinds of preparation to habituate with the pace and bouncy antipodean wickets.
“Keeping the bouncy wickets of South Africa in mind, we practiced on spreading stone-slab. Even we practiced in net making bouncy wickets. Hopefully the preparation has been done well,” Meraj also said.
“Actually the match practice is the key whatever the condition it is. If we could win the series in South Africa it will increase our confidence,” Mizanur Rahman Babul, head coach of the U-19 said this while replying to a query.
Sajjad Ahmed Shipon, team manager of the U-19 team, was also present.
