Bangladesh has seen a rush of fast bowlers of late but none of them could master the skill of reverse swing, an important component to thrive in the longer version format.
In Test cricket, Bangladeshi fast bowlers’ success is limited, vastly due to their lack of ability to extract swing in the older ball. There is only one bowler in Bangladesh who can swing the older ball a bit and that is Rubel Hossain albeit he never played Test cricket regularly ever since he made his debut.
Injury followed him right from the start of his career and recently he had some personal trouble due to have an affair with a model. However after solving all the problems, he now looks ahead as to how he could step ahead with his bowling. Reverse swing is the one that he wants to master in bid to establish him as one of the successful bowlers in the country. Fortunately for him, a master of this particular art—Aaqib Javed is in Dhaka to conduct a conditioning camp for the fast bowlers of the High Performance Unit.
The former Pakistani fast bowler whose career never flourished with glory because of the presence of two great fast bowlers-Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, will also work with national team fast bowlers for the last two days. Reverse swing became an art because of the great fast bowlers but Aaqib was not so much behind that two greats in delivering reverse swing alongside the conventional swing. Rubel is looking forward to grab that opportunity with both hands.
“Pakistani fast bowlers are famous for the reverse swing. They made this as a beautiful art,” said Rubel. “I have many things to learn from Aaqib. I want to share something about the reverse swing. Hopefully I’ll get some valuable tips from him.”
Normal swing occurs mostly when the ball is fairly new. As it wears more, the aerodynamics of the asymmetry change and it is more difficult to extract a large amount of swing. When the ball becomes very old—around 40 or more overs old—it begins to swing towards the shine. This is known as reverse swing—meaning a natural outswinger will become an inswinger and vice versa.
While he expresses his desire to learn the art of reverse swing, the pacer hails from Bagerhat also has been working to hone a new delivery—butterfly—in the conditioning camp.
“In the age of huge competition, you have to learn something new everyday. I also want to add something new in my arsenal. There is a new technique which I want to hone. It’s called butterfly. The ball should be delivered, keeping it in the middle of two fingers and in that case, it became slow after pitching to the batsman. If I can make it successfully, I’ll get the success,” he informed.
“I have been practicing it for a long but I have got side arm action with which it’s difficult to do such sort of delivery. But I am adamant to hone this skill.”
