The High Court (HC) yesterday asked the government not to bar BNP chairperson's adviser Shawkat Mahmud to go abroad for treatment. for 40 days.
In response to a petition filed by Shawkat, the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order. Shawkat Mahmud, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), filed the petition with the HC seeking permission for going abroad for 40 days on treatment purpose.
On July 17, a Dh aka court rejected an application filed by Shawkat seeking permission for going abroad.
Later, Shawkat moved with the HC seeking its permission to go abroad saying that he needs treatment as he has been suffering from various diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure and back pain.
Shawkat secured bail from lower courts in around 30 cases filed against him for vandalism and arson during the BNP-led opposition alliance’s anti-government movement last year.
