Authorities shut down Comilla University for an indefinite period on Monday following the death of a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in a clash between two of its factions on the campus, reports UNB. The male and female inmates already vacated their dormitories by 11 am and 2 pm respectively as per the instruction of the university authorities. Khaled Saifullah, a student of Marketing Department and organising secretary of Kabi Nazrul Hall unit of BCL, was killed and five others injured in the factional clash on the university campus in the early morning. Mujibur Rahman, registrar of the university, said the clash broke out between the followers of university unit BCL president Alif and another BCL leader Ilias Sabuj over lighting candle in front of the portrait of Banghabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the campus.
During the fight, the two sides exchanged gunshots leaving Khaled, a follower of Sabuj group, injured with bullets. Khaled was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctor declared him dead. The injured people were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, police in a drive seized 120 sharp weapons from three dormitories—Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Hall, Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall— of the university, said Shah Abid Hossain, superintendent of Comilla police. Police also detained 15 students for interrogation. Additional police have been deployed on the campus to avoid further trouble.
A three-member committee, led by treasurer Professor Kundu Gopi Das, has been formed to investigate the incident. Comilla University was set up on 50 acres of land at Shalbon Bihar, Maynamati as the country’s 26th public university in 2006. The university started its journey with seven functional departments. Now there are 19 departments under six faculties of the university.
