DB (Detective Branch) of police early yesterday arrested five suspected members of banned Islamist militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team from the city’s Patenga area along with two laptops, seven mobile sets and 11 Jihadi books. However, three-to four other persons managed to flee from the spot during the raid.
The five arrestees were identified Md Akkas Ali alias Jahedul Islam, 23, of Fatikchhari upazila in Chittagong district, Md Atikul Hasan, 26, of Pathantuli area in Chittagong city, Jamshedul alam Ridoy, 21, of Hathazari upazila in Chittagong district, Md Rubel, 26, Raojan upazila and Md Mohiuddin, 18, of Rangunia upazila in Chittagong district.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner Md Maruf Hossain said, “Acting on trip-off a team of DB detained the five persons from a home of Kathgoar area around 1am while they were sitting in a secret meeting to make blue-print for carrying out subversive activities.”
“Akkas, who was once a `saathi’ ranked leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir and later joined ABT, was leading the rest four ABT members. Jamaat-Shibir is patronising different militant outfits applying many techniques,” said Maruf.
The group had a link with ABT Chittagong regional treasurer Abu Musab Ibne Umaer, who was arrested from Sitakunda upazila on July 11.
DB sources said the detained were students of graduate level in the city’s different government and non government colleges, university and madrasha.
Of them, Akkas was studying Chittagong College, while Atik in Chittagong Commerce College, Jamshed in Omorgoni MES College, Rubel in Southern University and Mohouddin in a madrasa, said the sources.
A case was lodged with Patenga police station under Anti-Terrorism Act.
