Bangladesh players prepare them to counter the swing bowling as the most of the countries that they take on in the upcoming cricket season have some renowned swing bowlers at their stock.
Tamim Iqbal and Soumya would have to feel the wrath because of opening the innings and what prompts them to take preparation accordingly. While Tamim Iqbal successfully neutrilsed swing bowlers during his outstanding series in England in 2010, it would be stern test for Soumya as to how he deals with the swing bowlers.
England, a team bolstered with world’s best swing bowler James Anderson apart from the likes of Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, Chris Woakes, will be the first team whom Bangladesh will face in the current cricket season. The challenge to face such inform bowlers is obviously an uphill task because if there is slight hint of moisture, they could make a mess.
After the England series, Bangladesh will play away series against New Zealand, a country that prepares a sort of wicket which favours the swing bowlers. And New Zealand have a best swing bowler in Trent Boult. The likes of Tim Southee or Mitchell McClenaghan also could exploit if the wicket is spicy.
Tamim Iqbal established him one of the best players of the world against swing when he successfully neutrilised Anderson and co in both Bangladesh and England in 2010. He had two centuries—Lord’s and Old Trafford, the last of which is considered as the heaven for the seam bowlers. While Soumya still remains untested, he could ask for the help of his senior partner but for the time being, the opener practices in bowling machine to get his skill honed.
“The mental preparation is needed than any other things to counter the swing bowling,” said Soumya after the practice session of Bangladesh yesterday. “There are some of the bowlers who can swing the ball nicely but the batsmen should have to be patient. We have been practicing accordingly in fact. We have been using bowling machine to get used to counter the swing bowlers.”
“We will play the team like England, New Zealand, South Africa in the next cricket season. Against the last two countries, we’ll play at their own den. They have got bouncy track and a pitch, ideal for swing bowlers. The weather is also different. We can’t change the weather but if we prepare ourselves well, we can handle the swing and other there.”
Soumya however insisted on giving the full effort in away series rather than thinking about how tough the away wicket will be.
“It’s matter of giving the full effort and keep you charged up always. Away series is always tough but that doesn’t matter since you have to play there. So it’s imperative to be charged up always.”
Soumya set off his journey with the national team brilliantly as he scored runs in abundance, specially in ODI format. In this format he boasted a staggering average of 49.16 but his form has taken a nosedive of late, specially. In T20 cricket he couldn’t fare well and even couldn’t rediscover him in the recently concluded Dhaka Premier League.
Soumya is aware of that and claimed he could figure out the problem that followed him. He indeed blamed excessive T20 cricket for losing the rhythm in ODI cricket.
“ODI is my favourite format but playing excessive T20 cricket contributed in losing my rhythm. Hopefully, I’ll get back to my old form in the coming season.”
He also started bowling, a thing that he stopped after being injured. “Due to my injury I stopped bowling. Since I am now fully fit, I started bowling. I also want to contribute something with my bowling.”
