The inmates of Taj Manjil, where nine militants were killed in a police operation on Tuesday, do not know when they will be able to return there or salvage their belongings to shift to other places. Following the operation, the building, popularly known as ‘Jahaj building’ for its shape, has been sealed off and no one is being allowed to enter the building.
Police are monitoring the building, and the movement of people and vehicles on the street has been restricted for security reasons.
Some of the inmates are still in trauma.
Jahurul Islam, an inmate of Taj Manjil, used to live on the third floor of the building with four family members. He said he has been staying at a nearby mosque at night as he is not allowed to enter the building.
His family members have gone back to their ancestral home. He was waiting outside the building to get permission from the law enforcers to enter the building as he needed his medical prescriptions kept in his room.
“I have been living here for five years with my family. But yesterday’s incident has caused great harm to us. I have sent my family members to our village. I am living in a nearby mosque at night,” he said.
“I do not know when I will be able to enter the building. My medical prescriptions are in my room in the building. I need to buy medicine, but police are not allowing me to enter,” he added.
The policemen on duty said no one is allowed to enter the building as per the order of the high-ups. The building will reopen after getting clearance from the higher authorities. One of the policemen, preferring anonymity, said the militants had burnt money on the floor before the operation, and they had broken all their computers and mobile phones to erase information.
Kiron, a reporter of an online media, was living on the sixth floor of the building, just above the floor of the militants. “It was a horrible situation. I was terrified when the gunfight started,” he said.
He also said that police took him into custody for interrogation and released him on Tuesday night.
When asked, some inmates of the building said they will not live in the building anymore, but they do not know when they would be able to take their belongings from their rooms.
