The post-mortem of the nine militants who were killed in their den in Kalyanpur was completed by forensic experts of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at 2pm yesterday.
The bodies will be kept at the DMCH mortuary for a certain period. If nobody claims their bodies, they will be handed over to Anjuman-e-Mofidul Islam for burial, according to hospital sources.
A three-member team of the forensic medical department of the hospital, led by Dr Sohel Mahmud, started the post-mortem at 11:30am.
The two other members of the forensic medical team were Dr Pradip Biswas and Dr Sohel Kabir.
Dr Sohel Mahmud told reporters that they found bullet injuries on the bodies of the militants and no sign of other injuries. “We've recovered seven bullets from four bodies and all of them were killed in police firing. Each of the militants received seven to eight bullets,” he said. He added that the rest of the bullets passed through their bodies.
Replying to a question, the forensic expert said the militants were killed 12 to 13 hours before they received their bodies at the morgue on Tuesday afternoon. It only indicates that they were killed on Tuesday morning, he added.
Asked about the spot of bullet injuries, Dr Sohel Mahmud said he could not give a specific answer to the question.
“Injury marks were varied in different bodies as someone received a shot in the back, someone in the legs or hands, and some others in their heads,” he explained. Replying to another question, Dr Sohel Mahmud said they have received all bodies without identities and completed the post-mortem accordingly.
Asked whether the militants had taken any drug before they were killed, Dr Sohel Mahmud said it could be known only after receiving the report of chemical analysis of their blood.
“We've collected different samples from the dead bodies including blood, hair, muscle and urine for DNA and pathology tests in line with requirements of different intelligence agencies,” he added. The wounded militant, Hassan, is undergoing treatment at Cabin number 37 on the second floor of DMCH under police custody.
Meanwhile, BBC reports that Tauhid Rouf, father of Sezad Rouf Arka, a missing North South University student and also a US citizen, yesterday visited the morgue of DMCH to identify his son among the bodies.
Dr Sohel Mahmud, a physician of the forensic department, said Arka’s father thinks that the face of one of nine militants was similar to his son. He, however, was not certain.
“We've suggested him to take the DNA test to ascertain the identity of his son,” said Dr Sohel Mahmud.
