Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal insisted on keeping up the winning habit in a bid to acquire a boost to conquer any top nation in overseas, a thing which so far has eluded them.
According to Tamim, unarguably the best batsman ever the country has produced, any series victory over the big guns at their own yard would be pivotal in stamping Bangladesh’s authority.
“Win is always win, whatever it comes in home yard or foreign yard. The main thing is to keep the winning habit and if we can maintain our winning streak, it would give us a confidence to do well in any condition,” the swashbuckling opener said yesterday. “If we can play good cricket in overseas and if we can win the series, it would be good for Bangladesh. We can gain extra confidence from here. This is imperative at the moment.”
After the home series against England in next October, Bangladesh are scheduled to play a full series (three ODIs and T20s and two Tests) in New Zealand in December. No doubt the condition there will test Bangladesh players’ mental and physical strength.
Bangladesh have been unbeaten against New Zealand in the last two ODI series at their own soil. They have defeated the Kiwis by 4-0 and 3-0 margin in the last two bilateral series in Bangladesh
But they so far didn’t win any match in any format against the Kiwis in New Zealand. They have played five Tests there and lost all, out of which three came at innings margin. The margin of the rest of the two matches was nine wickets and 121 runs. They have played seven ODIs and lost all without much resistance. The margin of the only T20 between the two sides in New Zealand soil was 10 wickets. The stat showed how vulnerable the Bangladesh was against the Kiwis at their own yard.
Bangladesh’s only victory at New Zealand soil came against Scotland during the 2015 World Cup.
Tamim admitted New Zealand series would be tougher than their anticipation, “Yes, the away series in New Zealand will be tougher one. Not for us only, any country who plays there is used to get a torrid period because New Zealand has been outstanding at their home soil. The condition is also a factor.”
“Nothing is impossible actually if we can keep up the consistency which we showed in the last year.”
The Chittagong-lad believed the fitness session in the off season will provide them the necessary fuel to play a long season of cricket.
“Where there is any series going on, we don’t have enough time to work on fitness. So it’s a nice opportunity to keep us fit. We had extra fitness session before the World Cup and World T20 and we knew the result. So I think this fitness session will give us the fuel to be fit for whole season.”
While there was uncertainty over England’s tour here after the terror attack in Bangladesh, Tamim believed the series will get the nod finally. Tamim has beautiful memory against England as he scored many runs against them –whatever it’s in England or Bangladesh. He has two centuries against England, both came in England’s soil at Lord’s and Old Trafford.
Still Tamim thinks scoring against England would be challenging one, “They have some quality bowlers and they have been good form in longer version cricket off late. So they will be challenging for us.”
He also thought that at Honours board in Sher-e-Bangla National Bangla Cricket Stadium dressing room should be installed like Lord’s. He also was in favour to set up a cricket museum here, saying this kind of initiative would inspire the young generation.
